DERM Project

HandsPrevent work-related dermatitis. IT'S IN YOUR HANDS©

Safety Groups UK in association with the HSE and BSIF has developed the DERM project under the slogan:

"Prevent Work-Related Dermatitis. It's in your hands"

About Work-related dermatitis

Thousands of workers in industry suffer from work-related dermatitis

  • Is common and many individuals live with pain, discomfort and suffering.
  • Causes people to lose their jobs because they can no longer work.
  • Results in £millions being paid out to victims in compensation.
  • Costs industry £millions each year in sickness, absence and retraining costs.
  • Treatment takes up valuable resources of the National Health Service.

Take a positive approach to managing health and safety. Just by putting simple controls in place, you could prevent work-related dermatitis and the associated problems in your workplace. You could also avoid having to make significant compensation payments.

Work-related dermatitis can be caused by exposure to hazardous substances and physical agents:

  • Chemical (e.g. paints, solvents, dusts, metal working fluids, cleaning chemicals, hair shampoos, acrylates used in artificial nails)
  • Biological (e.g. plants, flowers, bacteria, fungus)
  • Physical (e.g. vibration, radiation and extremes of temperature and humidity)
  • Mechanical (e.g. abrasion)

It can also be caused by work that involves having your hands wet for long periods (wet working).

Whether you are an employer or an employee, do not become a victim of work-related dermatitis
