Health Risks at Work – Do you know yours?

Initiative Launch 16th May 2012

Safety Groups UK is committed to raising awareness of workplace health issues and changing behaviour among small firms. Working towards this aim in England, Wales, and N. Ireland, SGUK will be launching the Health Risks at Work initiative, at the Safety & Health Expo at the NEC on 16th May 2012, following its successful development and piloting in Scotland. Health Risks at Work

The overall aim of the initiative is to provide simple, concise information to help small businesses manage common health risks. The contents have been written in the form of Rapid reference Cards (RRC) which address five key health at work risk areas:

  • Risks to your breathing
  • Risks to your skin
  • Risks to your muscles , bones and joints
  • Risks to your hearing and touch
  • Risks to your wellbeing

To promote the campaign an ‘Introduction to Health Risks at Work’ DVD has been developed which is suitable for use by champions and trainers at training sessions, in company meetings and in many other similar settings in the community. This is available in five languages (English, Polish, Chinese, Urdu and Punjabi) to ensure that key health risks messages get across to as many workers as possible.

Safety Groups UK is looking to work with the network of local safety groups in England, Wales and N. Ireland to reach out to SMEs and promote the initiative.

Become a ‘Champion’

Safety Groups are asking all Groups whether they would be prepared to appoint a champion who will take the lead on behalf of their group;

  • To promote the initiative among the group;
  • To raise awareness among the membership through presentations and information sharing at regular meetings and mail;
  • To identify SMEs among your membership and give them help to understand the contents and aims of the imitative;
  • To seek support among your members who are from large companies to promote the initiatives among their subcontractors;
  • Where practical seeking opportunities to promote the initiative through local media;

Safety Groups UK will provide support and help, including the expertise of the working group members and supporting organisations (including the British Occupational Hygiene Society) and all campaign materials. A ‘champion’ workshop is being held on 15th June at Deb Ltd, Denby, Derbyshire.

Ill-health caused or made worse by hazardous working conditions is still a very a serious problem and SGUK believes that the potential to deliver improved health for workers through the Health Risks at Work initiative is considerable.

Please contact Charlotte Henderson chenderson@rospa.com know if you or any members of your Group are interested in becoming champions so that they can be invited to the Health Risks at Work launch on the 16th May.

EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN 2012 – 2013

Working together for risk prevention:
leadership and worker participation in occupational safety and health

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) is running a two year campaign entitled ‘Working together for risk prevention’. The campaign highlights leadership and worker participation as two key factors that contribute to effective management of work related health and safety risks.

EU-OSHA campaign website: www.healthy-workplaces.eu/.

On 20th April 2012, the GB launch was marked by a short film by HSE’s Chair, Judith Hackitt, available on the HSE campaign website at www.hse.gov.uk/campaigns/european.

The websites include information on the benefits of leadership and worker participation and show how you can get involved. Organisations are encouraged to participate, for example by running campaign related activities or incorporating elements of the campaign into existing activities.

The campaign will run until late 2013.

HSE Consultation - CD239 - Proposals to remove fourteen legislative measures

This consultative document seeks views on the Health and Safety Executive’s proposals to remove fourteen legislative measures (one Act, twelve Regulations and one Order and with a related provision in the Factories Act 1961) and to withdraw approval for an associated Approved Code of Practice. HSE believes these are either redundant, have been overtaken by more up to date Regulations or do not deliver their expected benefits.
The consultation began on 3 April 2012 and will end on 4 July 2012.

Asbestos ruling

Unite has won a landmark court ruling that paves the way for victims of asbestos-related injury to seek compensation. The ruling by the Supreme Court, which upheld Unite’s appeal and rejected arguments by insurance companies, will affect many of the 2,500 people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year.
Judges in the country’s highest court agreed with Unite that the insurers of an employer at the time of the exposure to asbestos should pay compensation. Further information on the UNITE website.
