Welcome to the Safety Groups UK Newsletter - Issue 015 : March 2010
Safety Groups UK
Setting up exhibitor stands and registering all attendees went relatively smoothly and the seminar started almost on time with over 70 attendees. Paul Smith, Teesside Safety Group Chairman welcomed everyone and highlighted the cooperation between SGUK, Teesside and Neshep to put on the event, sponsored by Nebosh. Presentations were made by David Cole, HSE; Roger Bibbings, RoSPA; Carol Grainger, HSE; Colin Smith, Central Weighing Ltd; Richard Clarke, Berrymans Lace Mawer; Rob Shaw,. HSL; Kerry Ross, Abacus Safety; and Steve Biddle, Road Haulage Association. Some speakers overran their allotted times and adjustments were made to the breaks with the knowledge that the last speaker from VOSA had had to cancel the previous day. The venue facilities were excellent and the lunch menu of soup followed by jacket potato and chilli, then by desert was extremely popular. Over 80% of the feedback forms were returned with the presentation from Rob Shaw on Slips, Trips and Falls being most liked. Thanks were given to the Teesside/Neshep committee members in particular Tracy Waters and John Raftery; Mike and Cathy Nixon for behind the scenes organisation; to the exhibitors; all the speakers for their input; the staff of MFC and all others involved but not specifically mentioned. (Sadly Maurice Adamson passed away on 18th February 2010)

European Campaign on Safe Maintenance
About the Campaign
The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) organises two year campaigns on important health and safety issues. The new campaign is on ‘safe maintenance’ and launches in the UK between mid June and mid July. The campaign runs until late 2011.
Maintenance –related accidents are a cause of concern. For example, early analysis of the most recent two years’ data indicates that 25-30% of manufacturing industry fatalities in Great Britain were the result of a maintenance activity.
Maintenance can be defined as working on something to keep it in a working and safe state and preserving it from failure or decline. The ‘something’ could be a workplace or work equipment etc. Two main types of maintenance can be distinguished as follows:
- Preventive/proactive maintenance: carried out to keep something functional’
- Corrective/reactive maintenance: repairing something to get it working again – unplanned tasks, usually associated with more hazards and higher risk levels.
Safe Maintenance ‘Good Practice Awards’ are open to entry until 17th September 2010 for organisations to put forward examples of safe maintenance.
See flyer
Further information
HSE and EU-OSHA will have campaign websites. The HSE website will be available from the UK launch, providing information and resources on maintenance activities for organisations to get involved with the campaign.
European Week (w/c 18th October 2010) provides a focus for interested organisations to promote the campaign and its materials to their employees.
A certificate of participation will be available via the EU-OSHA website.

In this episode: Find out about the next phase of the HSE's Shattered Lives campaign, HSE visits a Sainsbury's store and a Merseyside college to find out how they are reducing slips, trips and falls.
An airport services company has been fined ninety thousand pounds after a man was crushed to death under a vehicle at Heathrow Airport, a construction company has been fined twenty thousand pounds after a cherry picker overturned, seriously injuring the driver and in Bolton a construction company has also been fined after one of its workers fell to his death from an unstable ladder.

Outlook: New and emerging risks in occupational safety and health
from (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work)
Outlook brings together present and future trends of relevance to occupational safety and health, and offers an overview of the work of the European Risk Observatory on new and emerging workplace risks and their prevention.
The occupational safety and health status of the EU workforce is affected by many factors, not least its changing demographic structure, the spread of new technologies and a reduction in the importance of economic sectors that previously dominated, such as industry and mining.
This is bringing about changes not only in the numbers of jobs in each sector, but also the types of jobs that are available.
- The age profile of the workforce is changing.
- New technologies are creating new categories of employment.
- Globalisation means that health threats that were once distant easily spread around the world in a short period of time.
If the EU is to preserve the health of its workforce and maintain its economic strength and its competitiveness, it needs to meet these challenges proactively.
