New Safety Groups UK Initiative - Moving Goods Safely

The Safety Groups UK Management Committee are talking with the HSE about supporting the HSE's Moving Goods Safely campaign by delivering a series of seminars around the UK to be hosted by Safety Groups.

The seminars will be self funded with Safety Groups UK providing Speakers and delegate packs.

It is hoped that with the experience gained from the DERM project the Safety Groups UK MGS seminars can successfully deliver this important H&S message to the wider community.

NEBOSH and the Birmingham Health, Safety and Environment Association launch sholarships

from: NEBOSH NEWS (Issue 25)

NEBOSH & BHSEA launch scholarships at the Safety & Health Expo in May

NEBOSH in partnership with Birmingham Health, Safety and Environment Association (BHSEA) have agreed a scheme that gives scholarships for some of their qualifications.

Small Enterprises (50 employees or less) based in the West Midlands Region are being invited to apply for one free place on the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety. The certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK, with over 100,000 people having gained the award since it was launched in 1989. Members of the BHSEA can exclusively apply for a scholarship for the NEBOSH Certificate in Construction Health and Safety. Successful applicants in each case will have their course fees paid for by BHSEA and their examination fee waived by NEBOSH. In addition the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) have agreed to offer each candidate Affiliate membership free for one year. The places will be allocated on an open competition arrangement.

The scheme was launched at the Safety & Health Expo in May.

Barry Wilkes, Development Manager at NEBOSH commented “As a registered charity, we at NEBOSH strongly believe that we have an obligation to work with other charitable organisations in promoting health and safety, particularly through education and training”. He continues we are delighted that several of our course providers including The Key Consultancy Ltd, British Safety Services and Occupational Safety Training & Advisory Services have agreed to support this scheme.”

BHSEA Secretary, Andy Chappell, added “BHSEA is a Registered Charity, which exists solely to promote improvements in Health and Safety in the Workplace. We see this financial support for the smaller firms as the most practical way of achieving really worthwhile improvements in worker protection and accident reduction, where it is needed most.”

Ray Hurst, President of IOSH, said: “We are delighted to be able to support this regional training initiative for small enterprises. Statistics from Middlesex University Business School for the HSE estimate that the rate of fatalities in small workplaces is double that of larger workplaces (200 workers or more). It’s vital that all organisations, especially smaller businesses, access professional safety and health training. As a corollary to this, membership of IOSH provides access to extensive technical support and opportunities for professional development.”

For further information on the scheme and an application form please visit the news section of NEBOSH's website www.nebosh.org.uk or BHSEA's website

Safety Groups UK stand at the Health & Safety Expo

Safety and Health Expo at the NEC13-15th May 2008

Safety Groups UK stand

This years Safety and Health Expo at the NEC is now over and has proved to be the most successful year in recent times.

The stand was visited by over 210 people showing an interest in a local safety group or confirming their membership and support in their own area and for Safety Groups UK.

A new initiative was tried in that most exhibitors were invited to consider joining their local groups. Volunteers delivered nearly 300 envelopes to appropriate companies and organisations. Time will tell how successful this will be, however there was one immediate registration to a local group. Jafco Tools visited our stand and paid for membership of Birmingham Health, Safety and Environment Association when their secretary was present; a unique event.

Bob Rajan set up a demonstration of respirator effectiveness but this proved to be of little interest, even though selected exhibitors had been made aware.

Other groups and regional associations are known to have benefited with bookings for seminars and exhibitions that they were promoting.

A prize draw was run for all visitors and the lucky winner was Julian Eley, Dairyborn Foods who has been sent a £20 book token. We are grateful to a neighbouring exhibitor for selecting the winner.

The management committee are extremely grateful for the considerable time and efforts of their treasurer Mike Nixon and his wife Cathy to set up and man the stand for most of the three days. Other volunteers requiring thanks are Jim Flynn, Bob Rajan, Christian Hopper, Andy Chappell, Bob Cole, John Cairns, John Wood, Kerry Ross and Gordon Hicks.

We look forward to 12 - 14 May 2009 and the next Safety Expo; please put these dates in your diary.
