Thursday 24th January 2008

Annual London Meeting and Alan Butler Awards Ceremony

Safety Groups UK held their annual London meeting of Safety Groups UK in the Palace of Westminster.

Following a tour of the House of Lords for groups’ members, the meeting was held in Committee Room 4 to review the progress of Safety Groups UK. There was also a very interesting talk by Hannah Baldwin, the H&S Adviser at the Palace of Westminster, about the challenges of managing H&S in the mother of parliaments!

After the lunch break, which included a luncheon in the Attlee Room hosted by Lord Brougham, Safety Group UK’s President, for Safety Groups UK management committee members and guests (including the Minister Lord McKenzie and Judith Hackitt, the new HSC chair), delegates reconvened in Committee Room 4 (which was packed, standing room only) for presentation by Judith Hackitt of the Alan Butler Awards sponsored by BT.

The Awards recognise excellence by groups in four categories: best programme; best support for HSE priority topics; best seminar/event; and best communications. Award Winners 2007

Certificates were also presented to mark the 70th and 50th anniversaries respectively of the Safety, Health and Environment Forum (Scotland) and Kent H&S Group.

Judith then gave a thoughtful and challenging address on some of the main challenges facing us on the workplace Health and Safety scene and answered questions.

Safety Groups UK are very grateful, of course, for all the work Lord Brougham did in arranging room bookings and getting permission for photography etc and for support from others such as David Eves, Safety Group UK’s Vice President.
