Moving Goods Safely

Safety Groups UK are organising a series of seminars in support of the HSE's Moving Goods Safely campaign.

This new project is being run in the same vein as the DERM project, using lessons learnt.

‘Moving Goods Safety’ covers a range of hazards (slips and trips, musculoskeletal disorders, workplace transport, falls from vehicles).

About the HSE Moving Goods Safely Campaign

Moving Goods Safely (MGS) is a national project involving both the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Local Authorities (LA) working in partnership.

The project aims to reduce injuries and ill-health arising from the movement of goods from supplier through haulier to the recipient and end user including any home deliveries.

The project will focus upon the delivery and collection of goods and the hazards this generates.

It covers the main areas that cause the majority of injuries and ill-health to workers, including:

  • Workplace transport;
  • Slips & trips, and;
  • Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD).

Nottinghamshire

On 25th November 2009, a Workplace Transport Seminar was held in conjunction with the Nottinghamshire Occupational Safety Health Association (NOSHA) at the Nottingham Forest Football Club. NOSHA is a voluntary non-profit organisation affiliated to RoSPA, and a member of Safety Groups UK. In addition, NOSHA is a forum for promoting health and safety in businesses throughout the county of Nottinghamshire.

This event had been organised as part of a national campaign, focusing on reducing the number of injuries and fatalities due to vehicle related activities in the workplace, including falls from vehicles and moving goods safely. The event was aimed at anyone involved with transport in the workplace.
The day was not just a series of presentations. We had also managed to engage with Keltruck, who supply a number of vehicles to Nottingham City Transport. They supplied a number of vehicles on the day and there was a static display in the car park. This gave delegates an opportunity to see different types of commercial vehicles at close range and even have the time to climb into the cabs and see a number of safety features on board the vehicles.

In total, there were six presenters:

• Zoe Pearson Chair NOSHA Group
• Roger Monaghan HSE
• Lorna Robertson HSE
• Roger Bibbings RoSPA
• Graeme Baxter VOSA
• Colin Pettener TTC Group

Presentations were made on the following topics:
• Slips, trips and falls including falls from vehicles
• Managing Occupational Road Risk
• Case Study - Work related transport death
• Driver competency, inc. examination, testing, driving licence & health checks
• Vehicle Safety & Legal implications on the Public Highway
Several exhibitors were present namely, Keltruck, , Progressive Safety Clothing, Medi-Test, Actia, TTC Group, Nottingham City Transport, Pioneer First Aids, Polyco, Logistic Learning, BCS College, Ennstone Johnston and NOSHA.

The event gave HSE an opportunity to promote our key workplace transport messages and for the NOSHA group an opportunity to promote their group and to increase their membership to the group.

There were 106 delegates on the day representing vehicle operators, fleet users, transport and health and safety managers and each delegate was presented with a multitude of publications relating to Workplace Transport.

Teesside

Moving Goods Safely Teesside Seminar 12 January 2010 at Middlesbrough Football Club

Despite the wintry conditions during the previous week that seemed to paralyse most the area it was decided to run the event and in fact the snow and ice was thawing rapidly on the day.

Setting up exhibitor stands and registering all attendees went relatively smoothly and the seminar started almost on time with over 70 attendees.

Paul Smith, Teesside Safety Group Chairman welcomed everyone and highlighted the cooperation between SGUK, Teesside and Neshep to put on the event, sponsored by Nebosh. Presentations were made by David Cole, HSE; Roger Bibbings, RoSPA; Carol Grainger, HSE; Colin Smith, Central Weighing Ltd; Richard Clarke, Berrymans Lace Mawer; Rob Shaw,. HSL; Kerry Ross, Abacus Safety; and Steve Biddle, Road Haulage Association. Some speakers overran their allotted times and adjustments were made to the breaks with the knowledge that the last speaker from VOSA had had to cancel the previous day.

The venue facilities were excellent and the lunch menu of soup followed by jacket potato and chilli, then by desert was extremely popular.

Over 80% of the feedback forms were returned with the presentation from Rob Shaw on Slips, Trips and Falls being most liked.

Thanks were given to the Teesside/Neshep committee members in particular Tracy Waters and John Raftery; Mike and Cathy Nixon for behind the scenes organisation; to the exhibitors; all the speakers for their input; the staff of MFC and all others involved but not specifically mentioned.

Our best wishes were also passed on to Maurice Adamson, the Teesside Secretary/Treasurer who was quite ill and in a home. Distinguished service awards had been presented to him by Neshep Chairman, Alan Bassett.
